Penn President Liz Magill met with Dr. Drew Weissman, the Roberts Family Professor of Vaccine Research at Penn Medicine, who, along with his co-collaborator, Dr. Katalin Karikó, invented the modified mRNA technology being used in Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna’s vaccines to prevent COVID-19. Ever the believer in the power of science to improve, sustain, and save lives, the Weissman Lab and the entire team at the Penn Institute for RNA Innovation are hard at work on any number of other breakthroughs, including a pan-coronavirus vaccine to stop the next coronavirus epidemic, and a universal flu vaccine.
